The Open University of Sri Lanka is the top-ranking distance learning institution in SriLanka which offers a variety of courses where students and professionals can follow their studies via open and distance learning methodologies. It has initiated under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and OUSL Ordinance No. 1 of 1990 as one of the premier national university of SriLanka. 

The courses offered by the University of SriLanka includes certificates, diplomas, degrees and postgraduate degrees up to Ph.D. level. In fact, the degrees awarded by the university are ranked as equivalent to the degrees awarded by other government universities established under the supervision of the University Grant Commission. The open and distance learning methodologies allow to cater to ample students in every nook and corner of SriLanka through the well-equipped regional centers and eighteen study centers within the country in tandem with the main Regional Center which is located in Nawala.

The open university of SriLanka is rated as the 9th university among the Srilankan universities and 6353 among the international universities in the world.

The distance and open learning methodology ratified by the open university of Srilanka was initially considered as a complicated process for the students due to the lack of adaptability. Currently, this will allows students to gain not only academic knowledge but also to enhance skills and other competencies in terms of time management and organizing skills. The university allows students to enroll from the basic level and to continue up to the top hierarchy at the postgraduate level.

The concept of open and distance learning is transmitted through multiple modes of educational methodologies such as course material, audiovisual aids, discussions, day schools, tutor clinics, lab and field works, industry visits, web-based learning. Thus the students are graded through frequent assignments and final examination. Printed course materials are the heart of the learning process where the course materials are structured and organized as per the up to date subject changes. The study materials including all supportive materials enable students to involve in self-studying and independent learning.

Self- assessment questions have designed at the end of each factor so that students are able to gauge their status and level of knowledge which is a key to success in the final examination.

The day schools are conducted by the university lectures to support students who are indeed of more clarifications in difficult areas of studies and those sessions are not compulsory for students.

Credits are being granted based on the nature and the time duration of the programs which creates an Academic value that can compete with the other government Universities. Apart from that course codes have been assigned for each and every course offered by the Open University of SriLanka in order to distinguish the courses with the assigned uniquely identifiable codes. Additionally, personal tutors and counselors have been assigned for each and every registered student during pre-registration to make students more aware of the course of study and the general aspects of the university culture.

Online Support and My OUSL features are some of the modern initiatives adopted by the university along with the technological improvements that allow students to follow courses online without physically participating in the lecture halls. National Online Distance Education Service Access Centers (NAC centers) are established inspecified Regional Centres for the greater good of the students. The fully furnished library facility located in the main Regional Centre is a key resource for the students and the other library chain utilize in the study centers is also much support to students since it employs a wide variety of books including many subject areas. Audio-Visual Resource Centre is also a priceless freely available resource where students are able to access the internet for study purposes. Photocopy facility is also available in the library premises to facilitate students to obtain photocopies at affordable rates.

Over and above, Open University of Sri Lanka grants Mahapola scholarships for the students of low income families through the Mahapola trust which is very helpful for the students who require financial assistance for their higher studies since they cannot afford such amount for their studies by their own.
